AI-Based Drug Repurposing Research
Business Value: Drug Repurposing to Expand Market & Revenue
Summary: Discovery of Multiple Rare Disease Indications
A biotech company has an existing drug approved for a rare disease but wants to identify other potential rare diseases and pathways that could be treated with the same molecule. The amount of information about diseases and their pathways is large and complex, and the literature is extensive, so automated AI-based techniques were used to prepare feasibility reports.
Challenge: Efficiently Mine the Literature and Map Potential Pathways
The company’s disease area contained hundreds of potential rare disease candidates with a variety of genetic causes but with similar phenotypes. Multiple disease-causing genes were in the targeted pathway and the literature on the disorder class was extensive. The client wanted to efficiently identify genes in the pathway that could be modulated by the approved drug and map those to potential disorders, with supporting evidence, that could be part of a new basket Drug Repositioning to Expand Revenue trial.
Solution: AI Tools Help Produce Comprehensive Indication Reports
bPrescient’s team downloaded public pathway and interaction data and mined it to assess what genes were likely to be modulated by the molecule. Those results were used as input to GPT-based AI tools to identify literature references and other evidence for diseases that would be likely candidates for a trial. The team produced reports for each indication that included rationale, as well as other disease subtypes that warranted further research.
Outcome: Basket Trials Commence for New Indications
The client was able to identify several indications that were appropriate for inclusion in a new trial and moved forward with more detailed trial design and meetings with regulatory stakeholders.
